Discount Calculator
Enter the original price and the percent off to see how much you save and what you pay.
How it works
A discount is a percentage of the original price, not of the sale price. Twenty percent off 50 means you save 0.20 × 50 = 10, so you pay 40. The calculator does not stack a second coupon; if you have two successive discounts, apply this tool twice, using the first sale price as the next original.
Formula
Discount amount = original price × (discount % ÷ 100) Sale price = original price − discount amount
Worked examples
- 50 at 20% off → save 10, pay 40
- 80 at 15% off → save 12, pay 68
Useful notes
- A 100% discount brings the price to zero; more than 100% is arithmetically defined but rarely used at a till.
- This is not percentage change: a drop from 50 to 40 is a 20% decrease, which matches 20% off, but the two tools answer different questions.
FAQ
- How do I calculate 20% off a price?
- Multiply the original price by 0.20 to get the amount saved, then subtract that from the original. 20% off 50 is 10 off, leaving 40.
- Does this include sales tax?
- No. It only applies the percent off the figure you enter. Add tax afterwards if you need an out-the-door total.
- Can I apply two discounts in a row?
- Use the sale price from the first discount as the original price for the second. Two 20% discounts are not 40% off; they are 20% then 20% of what remains.
