How to Count Days Between Dates

Elapsed days count midnights between two dates. The same day is 0; neighbouring days are 1. Add one only if you need an inclusive count of both dates on the calendar.

Elapsed days, not a highlighter on the calendar

If you leave on Friday and return on Monday, three midnights have passed. The days between dates calculator reports that 3. Highlighting Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday on a wall calendar shows four dates. Both counts are valid; they answer different questions. Project length and hotel nights almost always want elapsed days. “The festival is 1–3 July” often wants three inclusive dates — add one to the calculator result.

The same date twice is 0. That surprises people who expected 1. There is no midnight between Tuesday 09:00 and Tuesday 18:00 either; time of day is ignored here.

Hotel nights match elapsed days

Check-in Friday, check-out Monday is three nights. The calculator matches that if you enter those two calendar dates. Do not add a day for “I used the room on Friday.”

Leap days are real days

28 February 2024 to 1 March 2024 is 2 days because 29 February existed. In 2023 the same labels are 1 day. The tool uses the Gregorian civil calendar, not a 30-day bank month and not “February always has 28.”

Weekends and “today”

Weekends stay in the count. Contracts that say “business days” need the business days calculator, which still does not know your local holidays. For a date a set number of days forward, use days from today instead of subtracting two calendar picks.

FAQ

How many days from 1 January to 1 February?

31 in a common January (elapsed). Inclusive of both dates would be 32, which is rarely what a duration means.

Do weekends count?

Yes on the days-between tool. Use the business-days calculator to skip Saturday and Sunday. Public holidays still count there.
