Army Body Fat Calculator
AR 600-9 uses the Department of Defense circumference equations, which are the same Hodgdon & Beckett formulas as the Navy tape.
This page estimates percent fat; it does not apply age-by-sex maximums or issue a pass/fail.
How it works
The Army tape test converts height and circumferences to inches and applies: men 86.010 log₁₀(waist − neck) − 70.041 log₁₀(height) + 36.76; women 163.205 log₁₀(waist + hip − neck) − 97.684 log₁₀(height) − 78.387.
Official screening also has site-of-measurement rules and maximum allowed percentages by age and sex, which this browser tool does not adjudicate.
Formula
Male: 86.010 log₁₀(waist − neck) − 70.041 log₁₀(height) + 36.76 Female: 163.205 log₁₀(waist + hip − neck) − 97.684 log₁₀(height) − 78.387 (all lengths in inches; AR 600-9 / DoD)
Worked examples
Male tape example
70 in, neck 16 in, waist 34 in → about 15.4%
Useful notes
- Not an official Army determination and not medical advice.
FAQ
- Is this the official Army calculator?
No. It implements the published circumference equations. A unit uses its own trained measurers and current regulation tables.
- How is this different from the body-fat page?
The equation is the same family. This page names AR 600-9 / DoD; the other names the Navy method.
- Does a number here pass the tape test?
This page does not apply maximums or grant a pass. That is a command decision.
