How to Convert Centimetres to Inches
Divide centimetres by 2.54. That factor is the definition of the international inch, not a rounded classroom shortcut, so the reverse conversion lands on the same length.
The only number you need
In 1959 the English-speaking standards bodies agreed that the international inch is exactly 2.54 centimetres. Converting centimetres to inches is therefore a single division. 100 cm is 39.3701 inches. 180 cm is 70.8661 inches. There is no second constant for “clothing inches” or “screen inches”.
The MultiConvers centimetre converter applies that definition. The reverse page multiplies by 2.54, so a round trip does not drift except for display rounding.
Height without mixing feet too early
A metric clinic note that says 172 cm is 67.7165 inches. To write that as 5 feet 7.7 inches, divide 67.7165 by 12: 5 feet with 7.7165 inches left. Doing “172 ÷ 30.48” for feet first is the same math (30.48 cm is one foot) but it is easier to lose the leftover. Convert to inches, then split.
Clothing size charts still add ease and brand lasts. Two jackets both labelled from a 96 cm chest are not guaranteed to match after you convert 96 cm to 37.8 inches. Convert the measurement; do not treat the size letter as a unit.
When millimetres are the better start
Engineering drawings and phone specs are usually in millimetres. 356 mm is not “35.6, then convert cm”. You can divide millimetres by 25.4 directly — that is the millimetre converter. An extra divide-by-ten plus a cm conversion is how rounding errors creep in on tight fits.
What this conversion is not
Square centimetres to square inches use 2.54². Fabric shrink, pattern ease and “2×4” lumber names are not unit conversions. US customary inches on a photo print (4×6) go the other way — use inches to centimetres or the temperature and mass guides when the number is not a length.
FAQ
- What is the exact formula?
inches = centimetres ÷ 2.54. One inch is defined as 2.54 centimetres, so the divide is exact.
- How do I get feet and inches from centimetres?
Convert to inches first, then divide by 12. The whole number is feet; the leftover × 12 if you started from a fractional foot — or take inches modulo 12.

Kilograms and Pounds Explained
One international pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. Body-weight scales, luggage tags and gym plates use that pound — not the troy pound used for precious metals.
Celsius vs Fahrenheit
Fahrenheit and Celsius are linear scales with different zeros and degree sizes. Convert with F = C × 9/5 + 32. They meet at −40. Oven knobs often round the result.
