CM to Inches Converter
Turn a metric length into inches when a clothing size, product spec or school worksheet is written in centimetres and the answer needs to be in inches.
Updated
How to use
- Enter the length in centimetres. Decimals are allowed (for example 172.5).
- Read the inch result. The page uses the exact 2.54 definition, not a rounded 2.5.
- If you only have millimetres, use the millimetre converter instead of dividing by ten in your head and then converting.
- Flip to inches → centimetres when the measurement started in inches.
How it works
People reach for this conversion when a tape measure, online size chart or furniture listing is in centimetres and the next step is an inch-based ruler, a US clothing label or a school problem that asks for inches. The calculator does one job: divide centimetres by 2.54.
That 2.54 figure is not a rounded teaching shortcut. In 1959 the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa agreed that the international inch is exactly 2.54 centimetres. Every result on this page is that definition, so converting 100 cm and then converting the inches back lands on 100 again (within display rounding).
A common real example is height. A person who is 180 cm tall is 70.8661 inches, which is 5 feet 10.9 inches if you later split the leftover into feet. This page reports decimal inches only. It does not pick clothing sizes, shoe sizes or hat sizes — those charts mix brand lasts and ease, not just a unit change.
Another everyday case is product dimensions. A laptop listed as 35.6 cm wide is 14.0157 inches. Monitor diagonals sold as “24 inch” are already in inches; converting the centimetre figure on a EU box is what this tool is for. For engineering drawings dimensioned in millimetres, the millimetre converter is the better first step because you avoid an extra divide-by-ten.
What this page does not do: it does not convert area (cm² to in²) or volume, and it does not apply fabric shrink or “ease” from a sewing pattern. If the number you have is already in inches, use the reverse converter so you multiply by 2.54 instead of dividing.
Formula
inches = centimeters ÷ 2.54
Worked examples
A metre stick
100 cm → 39.3701 in
Adult height on a metric chart
180 cm → 70.8661 in
A 15 cm ruler mark
15 cm → 5.9055 in
Common centimetre lengths in inches
| cm | in |
|---|---|
| 1 | 0.3937 |
| 10 | 3.937 |
| 15 | 5.9055 |
| 30 | 11.811 |
| 100 | 39.3701 |
| 180 | 70.8661 |
Useful notes
- 1 inch = exactly 2.54 cm. The result is decimal inches, not feet-and-inches.
- To split into feet, divide inches by 12. 70.8661 in is 5 ft plus 10.8661 in.
- This is a length conversion only. Square centimetres and cubic centimetres are different calculations.
FAQ
- How many inches are in 1 cm?
About 0.3937 inches. The exact step is 1 ÷ 2.54, because the inch is defined as 2.54 centimetres.
- Is 2.54 cm exactly one inch?
Yes. The international inch has been defined as exactly 2.54 centimetres since 1959. This page does not use 2.5 or 2.54 “approximately”.
- How do I convert 172 cm to feet and inches?
First convert to inches (172 ÷ 2.54 ≈ 67.7165 in). Then divide by 12: 5 feet with about 7.72 inches left. This converter stops at decimal inches.
- Should I convert cm or mm?
Use this page when the number is already in centimetres. If a drawing says 356 mm, convert millimetres directly so you do not introduce an extra rounding step.
- Does this work for screen sizes?
It converts the centimetre figure printed on a box. A “27-inch” monitor is already named in inches; converting 68.6 cm of that diagonal is the matching check.
