How to use
- Enter decimal feet. For 5 ft 10 in, convert 10/12 first and enter 5.8333.
- Read metres. Six feet is 1.8288 m; ten feet is 3.048 m.
- A statute mile is 5,280 ft, which is 1,609.344 m — the same as the mile converter.
- Use the inches page when the measurement is only inches, not feet.
How it works
US building codes, hiking maps and sports rosters often store height in feet. Metric passports, crane specs and EU drawings want metres. This page multiplies feet by 0.3048. A 6 ft person is 1.8288 m. A 10 ft ceiling is 3.048 m. A 100 ft radio mast is 30.48 m.
Person height is usually feet and leftover inches. 5 ft 7 in is 67 inches, or 5.5833 ft, which is 1.7018 m. 6 ft 1 in is 1.8542 m. Entering “5.7” as if the 7 were a decimal foot is a common mistake — that would be 5 ft + 0.7 ft (8.4 in), not 5 ft 7 in.
Elevation signs in US national parks are in feet. 8,000 ft is 2,438.4 m. Weather reports that say “snow level 6,000 feet” convert the same way. This is geometric height, not a forecast.
One mile is 5,280 feet, which is exactly 1,609.344 metres. If you already have miles, the miles-to-kilometres page is the shorter path.
The international foot used here has been 0.3048 m since 1959. The US survey foot (1200/3937 m) is slightly longer and should not be used for new work. This converter does not apply that older factor.
