How it works

To undo the Celsius-to-Fahrenheit formula you first remove the 32-degree offset, then scale by 5/9 (the inverse of 9/5). That is why 32°F becomes 0°C and 212°F becomes 100°C. A rule of thumb — subtract 30 and halve — is only a rough indoor estimate; this calculator uses the exact fraction.
