How it works
Metric fuel economy is usually quoted as litres per 100 kilometres. Litres required are (distance ÷ 100) × consumption; cost is that volume times the pump price. Cost per kilometre is total cost divided by distance. This first version uses km and L/100 km only — not miles per gallon. US and Imperial gallons are different sizes, so mixing them with litres would be misleading.

Litres = (distance km ÷ 100) × L/100 km Total cost = litres × price per litre Cost per km = total cost ÷ distance
Worked examples
- 100 km, 8 L/100 km, 1.50 per litre → 8 L, cost 12.00, 0.12 per km
- 250 km, 6.5 L/100 km, 1.80 per litre → 16.25 L, cost 29.25, 0.117 per km
Useful notes
- Consumption is L/100 km, the common figure on European and many other dashboards. Lower is more efficient.
- The result is a planning estimate. Real use varies with speed, load, weather and driving style.
FAQ
- How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?
- Work out litres as (km ÷ 100) × L/100 km, then multiply by the price per litre. For 100 km at 8 L/100 km and 1.50/L that is 8 × 1.50 = 12.
- Can I use miles and MPG?
- Not on this page. Convert miles to kilometres first if needed. US MPG and Imperial MPG are not interchangeable with L/100 km without stating which gallon you mean.
- Does this include tolls or parking?
- No. It is fuel only. Add other trip costs separately.
