How to use

  1. Enter trip distance in kilometres (convert miles first if needed).
  2. Enter consumption as L/100 km from the dash or a recent fill.
  3. Enter price per litre in the currency you will pay at the pump.
  4. Read litres, total cost and cost per km. Add tolls on the road-trip tool if you need them.

How it works

European and many other dashboards report litres per 100 kilometres. Lower is better. Litres for a trip are (km ÷ 100) × L/100 km. A 100 km drive at 8 L/100 km needs 8 litres. At 1.50 per litre that is 12.00, or 0.12 per kilometre.

The consumption figure should match how you actually drive. A brochure “combined” number is often optimistic. Using the L/100 km from your last two fill-ups (litres bought ÷ hundreds of km) is closer than the window sticker.

This page does not accept MPG. US gallons and Imperial gallons are different, so “30 MPG” is ambiguous until you pick a standard. Convert MPG to L/100 km on the fuel-economy tools, then come back, or convert miles to kilometres and keep L/100 km.

Highway vs city, roof boxes, cold starts and air conditioning move the real litres. Treat the result as a planning band. The road-trip calculator adds optional tolls and parking on top of the same fuel math.

Cost per kilometre is fuel only. It is useful for splitting a journey. It is not the full cost of owning the car.

Formula

Litres = (distance km ÷ 100) × L/100 km
Total cost = litres × price per litre
Cost per km = total cost ÷ distance

Worked examples

  • 100 km at 8 L/100 km

    100 km, 8 L/100 km, 1.50 per litre → 8 L, cost 12.00, 0.12 per km

  • A 250 km trip

    250 km, 6.5 L/100 km, 1.80 per litre → 16.25 L, cost 29.25, 0.117 per km

FAQ

How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?

Work out litres as (km ÷ 100) × L/100 km, then multiply by the price per litre. For 100 km at 8 L/100 km and 1.50/L that is 8 × 1.50 = 12.

Can I use miles and MPG?

Not on this page. Convert miles to kilometres first if needed. US MPG and Imperial MPG are not interchangeable with L/100 km without stating which gallon you mean.

Does this include tolls or parking?

No. It is fuel only. Add other trip costs separately.
