How it works
US cars, bike computers set to miles and many charity walks report distance in miles. Metric training plans and European road signs want kilometres. This page multiplies miles by 1.609344. Five miles is 8.0467 km. Ten miles is 16.0934 km. A 50 mile drive is 80.4672 km.
The marathon is the example that trips people up. Race directors measure 42.195 km. Casual US talk says “26.2 miles”, which is 42.1648 km — about 30 metres shorter. If you are comparing a GPS file to an official course, convert the official kilometres, not the rounded 26.2 slogan.
School “mile run” tests are a statute mile: 1.609344 km. A “5 mile” US fun run is 8.0467 km, not 8 km exactly. Pace (min/mile vs min/km) needs a separate division after you have the distance.
Highway exit spacing in the US is in miles. Converting 3 miles to 4.8280 km is useful when a rental car’s metric cluster and the signs disagree. Speed uses the same factor: 60 mph is 96.5606 km/h if you enter 60.
This is not a nautical-mile converter and not a UK pre-1959 mile. Modern UK road miles match this international mile.
