How it works
Drivers and runners who train in kilometres still meet US maps, car computers and race flyers in miles. This page divides kilometres by 1.609344, because the international mile is defined as exactly 1 609.344 metres. 10 km is 6.2137 miles. 100 km is 62.1371 miles. The “times 0.62” head-math is close; this page keeps the defined constant so the reverse conversion matches.
Parkrun and road races are the usual running case. A 5 km event is 3.1069 miles. A 10 km is 6.2137 miles. A half marathon (21.0975 km) is 13.1094 miles — not the casual “13.1” until you round. Official race measurement is metric; the mile figure is a translation for US readers.
Road trips work the same way. A 400 km drive is 248.5485 miles. Fuel-economy tools on this site convert L/100 km to MPG separately; this page only changes distance, not litres or gallons.
Weather apps sometimes show “visibility 10 km”. That is 6.2137 miles. It is not a forecast and it is not a nautical visibility report.
A nautical mile is 1 852 metres (about 1.1508 statute miles). Pilots and mariners should not use this converter for NM. A UK “mile” on modern roads is the same international mile used here.
