Convert a US recipe or deli weight written in ounces into grams so a metric kitchen scale can follow the same amount.

How to use
- Enter avoirdupois ounces from the recipe or package (8 oz cream cheese, 4 oz chocolate).
- Read grams. One ounce is 28.3495 g; eight ounces is 226.7962 g.
- If the recipe says fluid ounces of a liquid, use the millilitre converter instead.
- For a full pound (16 oz), you can also use LBS to KG and multiply kilograms by 1,000.
How it works
US cookbooks still say “8 oz cream cheese” or “4 oz chocolate” while metric scales only show grams. This page multiplies ounces by 28.349523125. An 8 oz block is 226.7962 g — slightly more than the 225 g some EU packs print, and less than a rounded 250 g. A 4 oz baking bar is 113.3981 g.
Deli and nutrition labels in the US often list a serving as 1 oz or 2 oz of cheese or meat. Those are 28.3495 g and 56.6990 g. If you are logging food in an app that only accepts grams, convert the serving, not a “handful”.
A cup of shredded cheese is a volume; an ounce of shredded cheese is a mass. They are not interchangeable. Weigh the ounce amount if the recipe is written in ounces. If it is written in cups, this converter will not help until you have a mass.
Sixteen ounces are one avoirdupois pound, so 16 oz is 453.5924 g. That is why a “pound of mince” in a US store is not 500 g. Buying 500 g when the recipe wanted 16 oz gives you extra.
Fluid ounces of water are close to 29.6 g, but this page is for the weight ounce. A 12 fl oz soda can is volume. Convert that on the millilitre page (about 355 mL), then weigh only if you need mass.
